Should the Government Encourage Home Ownership?

house2When I say “encourage” I really mean subsidize. In some countries it is not that normal to own your house. For example Switzerland – which does quite nicely economically.

Having rented and owned at various times in my life it is certainly preferable to own when you are living somewhere for an extended periods. Some landlords are not so good at tenant relationships.

However in most western countries the owned home is given a special status at many times in a persons life. It’s not considered in terms of assets when state retirement pensions are calculated or other social benefits are paid. Should this be so?

If I have a house and it is fully paid and then I sell the house and use the interest payments to rent a house. Am I taxed on the interest? You bet. But when I owned no tax was payable.
